Episode 47: Kids Explain The Feedback That Makes Them Compete Harder
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your kids are getting coached every day, but are they getting coached in a way that actually helps? We brought our kids on as guests and asked the questions parents and coaches argue about on the drive home: Does positive reinforcement work better than negative feedback? When does “push them to be great” turn into pressure that backfires? Their answers are funny, blunt, and way more thoughtful than most adults expect.
They break down the exact style of coaching feedback that lands best, why “tell me what I did right and what to fix” feels like honesty, and how yelling changes performance for different personalities. Then we flip to sports parenting and hear a clear request: parents should encourage first, save most critique for coaches, and be smart about timing after a bad race or rough game. We also talk priorities, discipline vs talent, friends as a motivation lever, and how comparison can either drive growth or steal joy.
The conversation stretches into real life beyond the field: AI in school (including ChatGPT for homework help and research), what jobs might change, and what kids notice when work and meetings crowd family time. We close with faith, favorite Bible verses, goals for the year, advice they carry, and the memories that bring the deepest joy.
If you care about youth sports, parenting, motivation, confidence, discipline, and raising resilient kids, this one will stick. Subscribe, share with another sports parent, and leave a review with one thing your kid has taught you lately.
Kids On The Mic
SPEAKER_05Welcome back to the Daily Edge special episode today. We have my daughter Hadley, and here in a second you'll get to see uh Noah, which is Todd's oldest, and TJ's oldest, Kay. So today um we are going to kind of get some insight from the kids. We're gonna ask some questions, we're gonna have some fun, and uh I'm gonna kick it over to TJ to get us started.
SPEAKER_03So something we've been talking about a lot. People that are familiar with our podcast, we talk to we talk a lot about kid sports and just a lot about kids accomplishing things in general. Uh one of the things that we've recently thought about is positive versus negative reinforcement. So all three of you are heavily involved in sports, travel sports, um, whether it be soccer, running, basketball, whatever. When it comes to engagement with your coaches, what let's let's phrase it this way. Are there instances where positive reinforcement works better? Instances where negative reinforcement works better, or are you kind of wholesale on one or the other? Like I only like my coach to tell me I'm good, or it only works when my coach you know tells me I've done something awful. What how do you guys feel about those things?
What Coaching Feedback Actually Works
SPEAKER_01Um, I feel like it there's certain scenarios where I would like I would like for them to maybe say you did this good, but then you need to do this better. Um and so like in for example, like in golf, like your backswing was good, but your fetch for your front swing wasn't good enough. Um so I feel like that's where it's there's kind of like a balance. Like I usually don't like all positive or all labor, there's always kind of like a bounce.
SPEAKER_03So does that make you feel like with the if there's a balance, does that then make you feel like they're at least being honest?
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because you know you're not perfect. Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, same with me. I like it when they tell me what I'm doing right and what I'm doing wrong.
SPEAKER_03Is there anything like Hadley, is there anything specific that you don't respond to? Like if like like if somebody starts screaming at you, do you just shut down?
SPEAKER_02I just I get mad. And so normally if someone screams at me, I kind of take it out on the other team. Cause that's just how I use my anger.
SPEAKER_05So that works for you, maybe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like sometimes dad will scream on the sidelines, and he's like, I only do it because you you wound up, but she definitely gets wound up in those moments.
SPEAKER_05What about from your parents? TJ asked the same question from coaches, but like you get feedback from us, uh whether you want it or not, sometimes. How do you guys interpret that? What things do you value that we say, and what things are you just like, don't ever say that again?
SPEAKER_02I like more positives from parents rather than like, oh, you could have done this better, you could have done that better. I like leaving that to the coaches. Like they I like coaches telling me how I can improve. I like parents telling me that I did good, but if I ask, if I ask if I need to improve anything, then I won't. Like how I can improve.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I don't like it when my parents tell me that I could do better, unless it's in running, because I know you have experience of that with soccer. I think you guys should just leave it to the coaches. Yeah, I feel like I like more negative feedback. Um, like I don't it's it's it's kind of the same thing with coaches switch, just like as long as they're not yelling in my face, I feel like I'm able to take it relatively well and not just shut down a lot of this coming screaming in my face, as long as it's just like, hey, you could do this better, try to do this, and that that kind of sits well for me.
SPEAKER_03You know, this is interesting. Um, we've heard this, you know, actually from your grandpa, your grandpa. Something he realized when we were young is that certain people respond certain ways to certain types of feedback. You guys ever find situations where people you're teammates with maybe aren't picking something up from a coach? Uh and you need to kind of just maybe translate it for me. I don't mean that literally, right? But like, you know, a coach is trying to make a point and maybe somebody's not getting it because they've shut down or they're not understanding. Is there ever in a situation where you feel like you're helping uh you know kind of get your teammate re-engaged and on the right on the right track or or aligned with the rest of the team?
SPEAKER_01Um, I wouldn't say with the rest of the team, but like uh one of my friends just started like a basketball training program and he's getting into a lot of the like he's new, so he's getting into a lot of the stuff. So I'm kind of like um and the coach, he's used to having people that have been there. So it's uh so it's kind of hard for him to understand, so I like to tell him, but like for when I play school ball, I leave that up to the coaches mostly. Yeah, um my coach really doesn't engage one-on-one with people. She usually just yells and then so I have to help some of the new year kids because some it's some of them is their first year and they don't get it. So I help them.
SPEAKER_02For me, normally that happens in practices. Like, because my team's very vocal. We all like to talk because we've been with each other for so long. So sometimes, like, some people won't pay attention and then I'll have to like be like, hey, this is what we're actually supposed to be doing. But that's it, yeah.
SPEAKER_03This is something that I I've got I have questions about a lot, and we won't make the whole thing about sports, but this is just a question I have. When is there
Parents’ Feedback And Postgame Timing
SPEAKER_03a specific amount of pushing that you like or dislike? Meaning, like I always feel self-conscious. I've told you this many a times about hey, maybe you should go get your run in. And I know that there's times where that may be a little bit too much, maybe it's your dad saying you need to go over to the course or whatever. Um, what's the right balance there?
SPEAKER_01Well, I feel like sometimes you you've been better about it by only telling me like once or twice, because sometimes I like literally completely forget. But sometimes I know and I just I'm thinking about when I'm gonna do it, and then you keep sometimes you keep pushing me, but then I'm like, okay, then I'll just gonna go do it. But sometimes I literally forget, so I feel like maybe two or three times if I'm not if and then if I'm not doing that, you can keep pushing on me because I have to get it done, and then I won't and like I'll forget.
SPEAKER_02For me, um when dad you ever told me, like, oh hey, you know, you run and you can do it like in the morning. Sometimes I like to just do everything on my own time because whenever I work out by myself or like run by myself without anyone telling me, I feel more accomplished. And so if I do things on my own time, then I just feel like I did more.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01I kind of agree with Kay in that there are certain times that I like to be pushed and for like you said, um for my dad to push me and say, hey, especially in the summer, hey, you need to go out to the course, um, XYZ, but then other times where it's like I know and I I maybe want to go out later, or I've already gone and he's still pushing me, I don't like that.
SPEAKER_05We are as uh parents, we are obsessed with helping you guys achieve your full potential. So as a as a parent, you see potential in your kids. It's one of the few people in the world you want to actually be more successful than you. Like, I want my kids to be a better version of myself, go further, go, and so naturally um we're all brothers and wired to kind of get after it a little bit. And the tendency is maybe to push more than we should at times, right? Um, so with that in mind, with our our true goal is to say, hey, how can I help you reach your full potential in whatever that is? And I think we tend to try to push that in sports, like I want you to be the best soccer player, but maybe I don't take into fact that maybe that's not the highest thing on your list. How would you advise us as parents to help you hit your full potential or at least understand what that could be?
SPEAKER_01I feel like um you guys could, I feel like you could um kind of just like tell me how I need to do better in my sports, but also um not always worry about it because I know I have something like I have more, I have something more made and stuff like that. Yeah, I feel like yeah, I feel like it's helpful when you say just like remind us like hey you should go do this or um XYZ, but like I feel like there's a line or if you're like yeah, I don't want to, like, don't if there's like if they said if one of the kids sets a line, don't try to like push it and uh go over it. Yeah. I feel like yeah, I do need reminders sometimes because um I forget and when you remind me, it actually kind of helps. But if I'm like still not doing it, then I'm gonna start I I just need more.
SPEAKER_03What's the best is is you know, to kind of piggyback that is the best way to understand where your head at head is is to just to have a conversation about it, you know, because I think what Trent said is relevant, meaning that we don't know if school is priority number one right now. I mean, and like he said, we want you to be the best at everything that you do school, sports, socially, you know, with your friends. We want everything to flourish, shine, whatever. Um that said, is it just asking you what's priority at the time, or is there a a way to tell, like, hey, you're really doing well, you know, hadly you've had a hat trick in four games this year, you're really crushing at soccer. Uh, you know, but but but like you said, maybe that's not what you really want to focus on right now. Is there a way to tell, or is it just something you guys want to talk about?
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, kind of like you said, just asking what's their top priority right now and seeing how you can help them in reminders and helping them how to do like and helping them giving critiques and stuff they're doing right.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I would feel like kind of what yeah, I feel like kind of to what um well like I I think what we're trying to get to is let's say that naturally we love to see our kids come compete. We love to see our kids compete. And so we want to see you guys do well in sports. We want you to be competitive. Um we know that if you just work hard at something, that you guys all are talented and gifted enough that if you work hard at something, you're gonna be good at it. And the truth is, is talent, and you probably heard your dad say this a ton, talent is just a it's a small portion of what it is, right? It's the discipline and the work ethic that's gonna make you great at something. So here we are saying, hey, if you work hard at something, you're gonna be in the top 90 percentile if you just work hard. However, we prioritize what we think you guys should be putting your time into. So help us. I'll I'll go back to you, Hadley. If we're saying, hey, I want you to prioritize, because I want you to be the best soccer player, the best student, or whatever those things are, what are the things that you guys would prioritize? Um, and do you understand the discipline versus talent and how do you guys approach that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I understand. Um, because you tell me all the time, like, talent is just one thing, but when you put effort into it, then you can grow.
SPEAKER_05But um, talk about this summer when you started running a mile a day. What did you learn?
SPEAKER_02The more you do it, the easier it gets. The when when I first started, because we have this big hill, which was like the hardest part and still is the hardest part, but it's like easier to like overcome because you know you can do it. Yeah, it makes it easier.
SPEAKER_05What things do you prioritize in your life that are the most important to you?
SPEAKER_02Um, I prioriti well, prioritize um my grades a little bit. Yeah, I do. Um right now I prioritize singing right now, actually. Um
How Much Pushing Is Too Much
SPEAKER_02I can't really do sports right now, but yeah, I it when I'm in sports, I just try and prioritize like my my health, my fitness, and then school. That's my priority.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my priorities are my grades. My priorities are my grades and my um and my sport. Mostly running. Yeah, I feel like I kind of agree. I think definitely my number one priority is uh grades and school. Um, but then definitely right under that is sports. So I don't think there's really not a ton of things in either in between or like below that. It's mostly just those two.
SPEAKER_05Do you guys value uh really excelling at one particular thing and like seeing yourself kind of be uniquely good at one thing or more kind of being well-rounded and being able to do many things at a uh you know, a level that's like a relatable level? What would what do you guys value, whether that's academics or sports or hobbies or otherwise, what what are your thoughts on that?
SPEAKER_01Um I like to be I would like to be uniquely good at like um oh not uniquely good, like good at like kind of everything I do, but right now I really want to be like I wanna be super good at running. That's my top priority right now. And at my at school. Which I am at school. Yeah, I feel like wait, what was what was I forget. I had it.
SPEAKER_05Do you yeah, do you feel would you prefer like to be uniquely good at a few things or just be kind of pretty good at a lot more things?
SPEAKER_01Um, I feel like I like to be more well-rounded for the most part, but then there are certain times kind of like uh Kay, you said, that I like to be really good at one thing. Um, and then there are other times where I'm more focused on being good at everything whereas being really good in one certain area.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I like to try and be the best in everything, but um I've realized recently that I I like being well-rounded because you have more like abilities to do how I like being well rounded because then you can be good at multiple things, but then when you have like that one unique thing that you can do, then like you can excel. And I feel like I enjoy like if it's like a sport, I like to really do it because then I know like when I'm doing and I can be good at it.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I was gonna say, yeah, uh, one thing we haven't touched on yet. How important on a scale you have to scale it in this whole process, how important are the friends that do it with you?
SPEAKER_01Um actually my friends are pretty important because like I that's that's what makes me excited for practices is going to see my friends because we always have a great time at training and soccer sometimes. Um but yeah, I I prioritize my friends pretty highly. Um yeah, I feel like there are a few things that um that I really like to have my friends in, like I really like especially in school, um certain classes, like I'd like to have my friends in those. Um but and especially like during the summer, like when I go out to play golf, there's always a few friends that are there. And so that it doesn't make it really, really boring, and then I can go play with them. And yeah.
SPEAKER_05So we've talked
Priorities Beat Talent When You Commit
SPEAKER_05and you guys have all mentioned school is one of your top priorities, and um you all have heard us talk about AI, and you guys have experienced a little bit of AI, and uh that's changing probably uh what you guys might do when you get older. Um have you guys thought about that at all? Or is there anything that you have thought about AI? Have you used AI for anything school related? And have you thought about maybe career-wise, how that might impact what you guys eventually do?
SPEAKER_01Um, well, I've never really used AI for um school related things. I've used I've used ChatGPT sometimes to help me on my math homework when you're out of town or when my because my mom is not very good at math. But um yeah, when you're out of town, I sometimes ask Chat GPT how to help me. But we use like this magic school, AI in school, and um the teachers let us use it. And I don't know, it I feel like AI is gonna start affecting more jobs because it's gonna start taking over and then people are gonna start losing their jobs and the economy is gonna decrease like that. Yeah, I feel like I haven't really thought about changing my job to AI, and I don't really use AI a ton in school, but like sometimes when I have certain like barriers or like or questions that aren't like Google, like they're deeper. Um, I'll probably I would use AI. Um, but I haven't really thought about um like jobs, like how jobs would affect, like I've thought about it like how it would affect other people's, but I haven't really thought about changing what I do because of AI.
SPEAKER_02I use AI probably for research purposes, because then you can like dig deep and ask the questions maybe Google won't answer. But for me, I don't think AI will change what I do in the future at all.
SPEAKER_05What do you want to do in the future? None of you said that.
SPEAKER_02Um if I can, I just want to be a mom. But if not, and I have to work. The only thing I've really thought of is a teacher.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I would want to be a mom, and there's also this one job that I've kind I've been wanting to do and I've been thinking about it. It's uh NICU nurse, where you help babies when they're right out of birth. I mean, I've probably had the same I've always wanted to be some sort of athlete like professional athlete, um, and that really hasn't changed. I'll probably start thinking about like actual jobs more at like eighth grade high school. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Did you have something?
SPEAKER_02Oh, I was just thinking, like if I really if like a dream job for me would be working at Disney World.
SPEAKER_01A dream job for me would be becoming a professional um runner. But I have to work for that, and it doesn't just come naturally. Nope.
SPEAKER_05What questions do you guys have
AI In School And Future Careers
SPEAKER_05for us? Can you do can each of you think of a question that you want uh you want all three of us to answer? And you can't ask us who our favorite child is.
SPEAKER_01Hey dad, who's your favorite child? You can be honest though. Wait, so this is like kind of off topic, but it's not a question, but it's kind of an answer. When we were talking about positive and negatives over sports earlier, when I come in from a bad race, I don't like to hear like what well like you did this wrong. I don't want to hear a bunch of negative things. I want to hear like it's fine, but you didn't do this right. Like I remember state.
SPEAKER_03How many times did I do that this year?
SPEAKER_01Once. Once I know, but it was terrible. I know it was state and I did really bad.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01kind of agree with Kay. I feel like I after a bad round or a bad game, I don't like like right after I don't like to I don't like to say hey you could have done this better, you could have done this. I like to be hey it's okay you did this well but then maybe hour two hours maybe a day later say hey you could hey you might want to work on XYZ um after watching your game for your round I agree.
SPEAKER_02I have a question. How are you so enthusiastic in the morning? In the morning he's like good morning everyone we're gonna have a good day today.
SPEAKER_01Yeah when we slept at your house you you were like when I slept over at your house you were like good morning everyone how is this is a beautiful morning well that's a great question.
SPEAKER_05Um part of that is is like attitudes of choice and I feel like I need to have energy and part of my role as a father and as a business leader is to try to bring energy and positivity to situations so um I feel like that's something I can control and um I want you guys to have energy and so I feel like it's contagious and if I bring it that maybe it'll just somehow some will come across to you is it is it is it not working um depends on the time of day.
SPEAKER_01If it's early in the morning no one's listening actually it kind of helped me I had an amazing day after that and I had a positive attitude but I have a question for all of you guys. How did you guys do in school when um at like high school when I was tired that's a good question.
SPEAKER_05Start at the bottom or the top let's start at the top with Uncle I had the advantage um I had the advantage of following Trent and TJ and as a third sibling I think naturally a lot of times uh you're looking for a way to have your own identity right I think we all played different sports and focused and emphasized on different things so we could all have attention uh from our parents in different ways and fortunately for me nobody really excelled academically by the time I came around so that was something that I uh just kind of leaned into I fell into I think just I had um you know as I was younger got good grades and got a lot of positive reinforcement for that and so uh I did pretty well in high school I think I graduated maybe 10th in my class out of maybe 400 um that started with uh that was uh it was a pretty big focal point for me I only played one sport in in high school um which was golf so yeah um so I was in the middle I got all my accolades from sports I basketball was my big um focus of my whole childhood growing up and then uh soccer was another one and so I was uh like I think I graduated with a 3.3 so that would have been back then you didn't have 5.0 scales it was a true 4.0 scale yeah it's like a 4 4 1 4 2 get up to but it it was AP classes yeah but you now you can get like 5.0s you couldn't get a 5.0 I don't think four like four and a half I think was our so I I was uh I was in show choir I was focused on sports and dad was more excited about me shooting a basketball than the report card that I was getting so I was able to get through classes um in that B2C range and ended up you know graduating with a 3-3 which actually got me into both IU and Purdue at that time uh that was the equivalent so I think the equivalent now is more like a 3.8 to 4.0 um we just weren't as smart back then well wait I have one thing to say so we were talking with Papa Tim earlier and he said how Uncle Nervy wouldn't go out and play basketball until he got his homework done I've I've heard the story.
SPEAKER_03He would do it on the bus when he was younger. Yeah um you're right I was at the bottom now um like way bottom um but I came from a so I went to St. Paul and my eighth grade class had 13 kids in it and um it had been that way probably since fifth grade. So I had between 10 and 15 kids in my class and while closed that year for high school I was thrown into a class of 400 for me it was extremely important to be well liked and to be the center of attention and so I was really good at that. Unfortunately that was all I did it helped me develop a skill set um when it comes to people and building community and all of those things I'm not the example uh as it as it relates to um I took a different path as it relates to high school grades.
SPEAKER_05I think I graduated with a 17 barely graduated like within credits the here here's some interesting things that you guys will find. So there is BookSmart which Uncle Nervy applied himself and was incredible TJ Bill probably one of the first 50 MP3 players in his car in high school took a computer he like back then we all we had was a cassette tape. You had to put a cassette tape in that's you had to rewind it when it was over he took a a big old tall speaker he took the guts out he put a motherboard built the computer built put like 3000 MP3 songs and we were in going to school and we could play 3000 different songs in the car in the 1990s and that was completely unheard of so like TJ was very obsessive about things and still is when he gets his mindset on something it just wasn't school. So it I think it's hard to tie uh I'm coming to his defense a little bit it's hard to tie intelligence to just like I think whatever you're interested in is I think what you excel in. And so whether it's sports or it's school or it's weird things or being class clown um where you I I think what you should learn from all this is where you put your time and energy you're probably going to be decent at it.
SPEAKER_03Have a plan. I mean no have a plan you know I mean that that's a great point I was obsessed with technology building websites in 1994 um there's a lot of other things we won't talk about on this podcast but needless to say it was hundreds of hours spent building computers writing code um and this and it ultimately led to being the first full-time hire in the service operations center at Microsoft period um but that was because I was able to apply a passion to something um but I had to go a completely different route I did a year and a half of college and then went and became one of the again early certified systems Microsoft certified systems engineers in the region and uh that was due to putting a lot of time and effort and hard work into a specific um passion.
SPEAKER_01Yeah boy no do not I wonder how many B's do we have between the three of you zero zero I don't have I have all A's so zero B's way to go I'm kind of balanced I mean I had a B I'm good at my sport and I'm good at school I have all A's I'm an aim not surprised you guys all have it I'm really I'm really close to a B I'm like I have like a 89.66 or something.
SPEAKER_05Have you guys ever had a B in your life?
SPEAKER_01I had a B yes I had a B minus and I I had a B minus once and it was actually the other day and I was stressing out so much that I had to go to Miss One my social studies teacher in the middle um it was like four minutes left of this thing we have in the day and then I had to go to her and I had to like beg for her to change my grade but like I had to fix it no I had to fix all my assignments and then I like sprinted to her room and I was like this one I know this I was like I was so scared I hate having I can't have anything under my mind as well right now I think the last time I ever had like a B on like the end of my report card was last quarter of third grade.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But there was one time in fifth grade where she didn't give me enough work that I could get an A so I considered an A because then she just changed it and I was like I think I'm very close to a B in um language arts but I got a better degree in my supermarket the other day and I was so proud of myself I think I'm at an A I'm still at an A she's still that actually brings up another question I have so um let's talk about comparison uh we call it the thief of joy on this podcast but how how do you guys navigate today with social media and
Kids Interview Us On Grades
SPEAKER_05you guys see all these things I don't know if you guys are on social media or not um but like comparing yourself to others how do you do you do that? How do you process that?
SPEAKER_01Um for social media I don't because I just don't see the need to maybe like with sports and stuff I might compare myself like um in a game I'll like miss a shot I was like oh if only like I had like the footwork of one of my friends who has like impeccable footwork but like sometimes I'll do it on stuff like that but then normally I'm like there's like no reason to yeah I sometimes compare myself too or I'm on the BT and I always compare myself like oh I could be oh I'm I need to work harder if I want to do that or running I compare myself to Yeah my faster friend Yeah I always compare myself to her I feel like I'm not on social media at all so I feel like I don't compare especially but on social media obviously but I feel like in some scenarios um especially like in tournaments um I'm like I could have been there or I could have done this um and then like in yeah like in golf tournaments and in basketball games I'm like I could have made this or I could have done this um and then in school I feel like there's not a ton of times where um I'm comparing myself to anyone else so I don't do that a ton it's mostly in sports just to try to get me to work harder.
SPEAKER_02One thing that I always like compare myself to is my older brother Roman because he'll be like he'll get like good grades and he doesn't have to work on his papers or like stuff like that. He'd be like oh yeah da da da da da and it's like Roman if only like he could have such good grades but he actually does but I was I'm like Roman I wish I could memorize stuff like that like you so that's one person I do I'm the oldest so I don't I mean there's sometimes I feel like Oliver is definitely more aggressive than me so sometimes I try to be like him in that but besides that I don't really compare to any of my siblings because they're all younger than me.
SPEAKER_03Same yeah one thing about the three of you in particular and I'm not saying that this isn't the case with you know there's 10 grandkids but any of the other ones the three of you all have a uh unique ability to kind of lock in and stay focused on goals you know Hadley you have a running streak that's gone on forever um Kay you've done some pretty amazing things know what I mean you probably I would say hour wise practice more than anybody um so what is it that contributes to you guys being able to do that on a consistent basis staying engaged staying locked in um what are some of the the factors that you think contribute to that um well wanting to be like better and like when I compare myself to someone I want to be like them so I work to do that.
SPEAKER_01It's yeah it's kind of weird I don't feel like I I just feel like I will go out and practice like I don't feel like I really think there's really not a big driver but then there's some times where I don't want to do something or um I don't yeah like I don't want to go to a practice or go to go outside and play. So I feel like yeah.
SPEAKER_03How do you get by that though?
SPEAKER_01Like when you don't want to like is it just somebody forces you to go or you just convince you not that someone forces me it's like my dad's like hey do you want to go and I'm just like yeah I could probably go and I'll walk over and then there's some times where my dad tries to push me and I still won't go and then I'll I'll just be like well I didn't go yesterday so I gotta go today.
SPEAKER_02For running with like the streak the one thing that like kept me going was I just kept thinking what's the point of stopping like you already get so far and it's like you know you can do it what's the point of just stopping
Comparison Without Losing Your Joy
SPEAKER_02what is your well do either of you have questions yet that you want to ask no I'll keep going I have I have one question when will your work slow down is that for all of us or just me?
SPEAKER_05Mostly you uh that's a really good question.
SPEAKER_01Um well I would say what what qualifies slowdown um like less um less day less weekends and less hours after five o'clock where you're on your computer doing work or at the office doing work.
SPEAKER_05Why don't you just before I answer that why don't you share your kind of perception or experience how many evenings you know is that a a frequent thing evenings and or weekends like how much time is your kind of perception that I'm spending working yeah I feel like it's kind of gone a roller coaster like five four or five years ago it was he wasn't doing a ton, you weren't doing a ton and then it kind of started to get up especially like with ethernize um and premium logic kind of getting up and running it's kind of gone it went up for a little bit but it's gotten better but it's still up there.
SPEAKER_01I feel like there's a lot of times where I'm like hey dad do you want to go go to the gym or go outside to play golf in the summer and he's like no I have to work or there's times um that's that's mostly what I'm experiencing like on weekends and after school I'm like hey do you want to go outside and rebound for me or do you want to go the country club that I go to do you want to go to Chatham? And he's like no I have to work um and so that's kind of what I'm experiencing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah so I would say uh it's probably I would say in the next year or two I expect it to slow down um considerably uh as eternized gets off the ground I think that's the big one um that is you know just because I'm having to I think that's an interesting thing about startup companies if you guys ever start up a business be be mindful because um you are the one that kind of has to do all the work at that at that size you know if you join a larger company a lot of times there are roles for different people to do different things but when you're starting something up off the ground and you're kind of running it you're like you're doing all of it and so that can be a little bit challenging. Yeah I would say a year or two I I would say um you know I have a little bit of a a different perception so it's interesting to hear um you know uh of of kind of the weekends and some of the evenings I mean most evenings I'm shuttling you guys around or I'm taking you to school a couple of days like usually I don't get home till 530 but it feels like from then on 530 to bedtime you know I'll probably pull up my computer maybe for 10 to 15 minutes on occasion or maybe there's a couple of nights a month where I'm you know maybe doing a couple hours of work but uh I'd be interested in your take on that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah I feel like kind of what you said like getting home 530 I feel like you're kind of I feel like it's more like 6, 630 um especially on and then um like you have day um yeah I feel like I wouldn't say it's I feel like I'd say it's probably 10 plus days a month and I feel like it's not 10 to 15 I feel like especially I feel like it's more probably like 30 to an hour. Yeah my dad used to work a lot when I was a kid he was you were always gone he was always gone he was always on the trip and now you work a lot you're always on meetings like whether you're taking me home from school taking me to school to practice just in general you're always like I've been on the phone a lot yeah he's always like I got a meeting at 1230 at one I have one at two I have one at 330 I have one at eight like it's all and I'm gone next week.
SPEAKER_02And yeah he's still gone frequently and yeah sometimes I ask him to do stuff and I'm like dad you want to go do this like sorry I have to work I have a meeting unless it's running I almost always say yes when when I was younger my dad used to be gone all the time like I remember one specifically was when he went to Cambodia for 10 days but I remember when I was I was younger I I felt like I barely saw him but now I feel like I see him like almost all the time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah kind of I feel like kind of going on to what you there's a lot of times where he's picking me up from school he's taking me to school and he's like oh I have to jump on a car and I'm like I'm not like that doesn't frustrate me that I'm not like aw but then I feel like there's like when you went to China the first two times you were gone for like two weeks it was a lot um but especially like earlier in Eternise you were traveling a lot in pre-man logic too. When you were when I was a kid you were you would always be gone for like a week and then you come back for like a two or three days and then you go again.
SPEAKER_03I got a question. Oh we go for it.
SPEAKER_02Oh um what's your
Work Startups And Family Time
SPEAKER_02Bible verse I would say I'll jump in here.
SPEAKER_05Mine is Romans 12 2 do not conform to the pattern of this world that's kind of been the inspiration behind eternized I think the way the world sets us up these days the way society's wired is um tempting um but I think our ability to not conform to that is uh really important.
SPEAKER_01Oh okay take this one for us I know it's not you're not gonna but I really like this mine is Romans 1245 actually for trust country this year we did the whole chapter of Romans and we had to memorize it all. I did it but Romans 1245 just as each one of us has one body with many parts and all these parts don't have the same function so in Christ we who are many form one body and each part belongs to all the others. I don't know that version just sticks to me like saying we're all one and we all need to treat each other right and we're all a family and stuff like that. And yeah.
SPEAKER_05The whole is greater than the sum of the parts yeah yeah I don't know if I have a favorite one that I could pick out um I know that seems like a cop out there's been a few times where I've memorized entire like we're memorizing Hebrews 11 right now. And I feel like as I go through life and I spend time in the Word, whatever I'm focused on comes to life. So I don't have a verse that I've that stood the test of time for me, but there's been times when I'm spending time in specific um scripture that those tend to come to life more for me than others. So I don't have a specific verse.
SPEAKER_01Staying on the same topic of religion stuff like that. I feel like start our family has a week we need to start going to church more we used to we used to go all the all every single day like every single weekend every Sunday and now we haven't done it as much and I actually I want to get to know the Lord more like I want to and I that's why I just my friend actually she's a huge Christian every time I go to her house something just happens I'm like oh I want to be more like her and I want to know the Lord more. Yeah I feel like um my family has definitely done a better job like last year and this year going to church but I feel like kind of like Kay said especially I was at a Catholic school and then I left I feel like it's been harder for me to kind of dig into the Bible and go to adoration and go to confession and do those things. Like I don't have a problem going to mass um and like I go to Sunday school so I don't have a problem with that but I feel like it's hard for me to do the other things besides those two.
SPEAKER_02For me I've been going to a Catholic school my whole life almost out of it but um like knowing Jesus and loving him like kind of been engraved in me. But I went to a camp called Camp Canakuk and when going there I found like everyone there loves like being and spending time with the Lord and after going there I know this past year really like like I really wanted to have that relationship with God and like reading the Bible and learning how to like really live in the word of God and it's been pretty nice. Oh yeah I do. What's your favorite verse?
SPEAKER_01It's um I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength it's always on my phone background I have that background too so I have a this can be in any facet of your life spiritually socially athletically what do each of you have one big goal for 2026 for the rest of this year in any of those facets that you want to talk about I have a couple like for each I have one for athlet for um athletics and for religion I wanna get uh closer to the Lord I wanna go to church more often I want to start doing like a Bible study I want to start digging into the Bible and for ac I want to get better in running mostly because I want to start excelling I wanna I wanna um start placing high in races um even start winning races um and yeah I feel like I don't necessarily have one big goal for even like every category or one big old goal overall. I feel like I have tiny not I wouldn't say tiny but like smaller goals that will help me because I feel like there's some times where I look at something and I'm like oh wow I don't know if I'm gonna be able to do that because it's a super it's really big um but um like there are other times like I was trying to hit a certain hours goal last year for sports um and so I was that was really weird because it was uh relatively large and so I kept trying to push to get more but and there are other goals where it's like it's a big goal but I don't approach it with the same mindset so I've I've been trying to figure that out um what are a couple of your goals for this year um I have like grades uh school it's mostly just grades and then for golf I have like golf practice goals and then like golf course goals so I'm trying to shoot in the 70s three times um and then I have like basketball basketball is kind of weird because there's not a ton of things I can track um so I don't yeah I don't really have one for basketball but I feel like there's a there's a good amount for golf just easier to track I feel like um for me like Noah said I have like more like smaller goals than I do like really big ones um I've been trying to think of some um one that I like maybe running a bit more like more races I think that that would be fun um any particular races maybe anything you're willing to commit to on air uh possibly the the ultra possibly which one the full mo or prairie the prairie because because last year when dad was doing it it was just so fun and like I wanted to run so I thought that was fun but yeah yeah I enjoy the prairie as well I mean last year I went pretty far but I want to go even farther this year and maybe have like me and you can run together for some yards. I just don't leave me leave you I just well well yeah but like you'd already been like running already yeah yeah I feel like I want to do prairie but I feel like for me running isn't one of my top priorities like I would like to but I feel like it doesn't like it's not my one like I kind of like I already said like it would be nice if I was able to run three four plus yards at prairie but I don't know how important I mean I guess I know how important that is but it's not it's not that important to me to be able to run. Noah did a couple yards with me. Yeah I think it was a night loop with me that is the only reason I did a night loop I think it's too I've I've already talked to my dad about this how the night course is the night course but it's longer too and actually no it's not it feels longer but it does feel longer you have to put stuff on
Faith Goals And Closing Reflections
SPEAKER_01like this side of the course that makes people okay I got a question for you guys.
SPEAKER_02Best advice you have you've been given it could be from a parent it could be from someone else what is your go-to thing like I'm trying to remember um small things what is it doing ordinary things over a long period of time create extraordinary results.
SPEAKER_01Yeah when I was running I I found that to be very true yeah I saw this quote on social media it was like if nothing was hard everybody would do it and that's like nothing is really impossible it's just gonna be hard to do it so that always takes like and if everything was easy everyone would do it. Yeah I feel like my dad has definitely been the motivator for almost everything that I do um but like he likes to send me quotes sometimes um but I feel like I don't really have one big advice it just he sends me little things that just keep me going and keep me trying to get better and so that's why I look to him for most for a lot of like when I have a challenge I look to him. Yeah my dad helps me too he gives me like advice on running because he's um very experienced in that stuff which and when he gives me advice he keeps me going this is kind of off topic but I've been getting like these random like minutes like one day I just want to go to practice and work like super hard and it's just with running that um but yeah I get like oh I want to work something that also helps me during running is when I like I like finishing first and not when like like when we're doing workouts and we do partners I not like losing that's why yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01I was completely off topic sorry that's okay.
SPEAKER_05So you guys may be watching this in 10 years in 20 years maybe 30 years with your kids what's something you're like man I wish I would have asked my dad or is there anything else that you'd want to cover like one of your favorite things or is there anything else you'd want to capture today?
SPEAKER_01What is your favorite memory of running oh goodness of me personally?
SPEAKER_03Yeah like I've seen pictures on your thing with you Uncle Trink Uncle I think there's probably two that stick out one would be Boston with those two that and there's just it's up there um it's the worst weather year in the history of the Boston marathon and there's so much around that it was extremely difficult to find each other. We spent two hours looking for each other to start the race um and we finished in I think it was Trent PR um and it was absolutely off the charts it would be that in in Vol State which was the run across Tennessee. Those would be my two personal experiences.
SPEAKER_05Yeah um for me yeah Boston was pretty special once we found Todd that was going to be a disaster um some of mine have been as a spectator uh when I first watched you when I watched you guys run the marathon I was pretty emotional for the first time 2012 I think um watching TJ fight shin splints and come back and and run 170 miles and finish ball state was like one of the most mentally like impressive things I think I've ever seen um but there's been a lot of I think the cool thing about running is there's just so many great journeys with so many people and it's just as much fun to be the runner as it is the pacer. John Faust breaking five hours and then turn on next year breaking four hours. Some of the Ragnarks have been unbelievable winning gold by X seconds and running in a trail uh which turned into a river in the middle of the night like it's uh seems like every time we go to compete something epic happens.
SPEAKER_03That first into coast is pretty wild.
SPEAKER_05A lot of great memories I have a yeah I have one I have a question for you what's your kind of like he said what's your favorite memory but not like with a certain sport like with like your brothers or your parents or like with me and or mom just what's your favorite memory overall basically favorite memory in life is what you're basically gosh that's really hard um can we come back to that and just sure that's a that's a big can I dad what is your favorite memory with me with you yeah with me oh man you guys asked the tough ones again there's so many memories um you stepping in and running with me uh you ran four yards I think cold turkey um at prairie was super awesome uh gosh the memories with you and um Eden and uh Roman skiing on the mountain this last year when it was just us and we were ripping down it together. And then there's I I would have to go back through some of my my pictures to remember I mean and then sports like just seeing you.
SPEAKER_02I think my favorite memory with you and like a couple other girls um was we did we did a daddy daughter date with a couple other girls and we had like a whole limo and we went to go eat and we were all in dresses and I really like that memory.
SPEAKER_03Yeah dad what's your favorite memory with me it does not have to be running your birth no um problem it's not if it doesn't have to be running I mean there there there have been yeah there's there's those are the only ones that were it's just us typically so like some of the state tournaments going or nationals like those have been those are always fun.
SPEAKER_01I feel like one of my favorite memories with you not running related was when I was at the hospital and I remember us playing that strawberry shortcake match oh that was fun when I was all wrapped up and we were going to like the Claire's inside of the mall and that was and we were playing on like the little thing.
SPEAKER_05Colorado trip yeah that was fun yeah if I just your favorite one I'll just stick with what everyone's doing the favorite memory of us probably going to Boston together. Oh yeah that was that was definitely fun yeah you being there to be able to watch that and then hand me my water bottle and my gels and stuff at the that was um and then we checked out Boston for a couple of days went to that Celtics game oh yeah that was I feel like I would like to go see my dad run Boston but he's never taken I haven't run it very often where do you feel most happy like joy deep girl yeah where do I feel most joy um I guess a couple of places um I love being with my family I love when we travel together and I told you guys this I love when we go to concerts together actually yeah it's just so much fun because we love music. But I love to travel with you guys and be on vacation. I love I do love work. I do find joy in solving problems and um I don't know.
SPEAKER_02I think my favorite is when um we get with mom's side of the family and like we um go to the Pizza Shack.
SPEAKER_01Pizza Shack favorite memory yeah I always like going there because then they say the funniest stories ever my favorite place I find joy in is when we all meet up here. I remember one Easter it was all of us including Mimi it was before Mimi test and that was like my favorite like that was so fun and it was like my favorite memory yeah kind of like a case that I always love when like all of our families get together and then especially like on my dad's side because on my mom's side it's just she has one sister and then they it's my mom's side she has one sister and they have one friend and they have one kid. Um so and he's like I think he's like one and a half or he's might be two now I don't know but he doesn't um he doesn't understand so it's really fun to get together um whether it's here or at your lake house for Christmas um or whatever. It's really it's blessed. Yeah. Yeah. I don't necessarily dislike my mom's side of the family.
SPEAKER_03It's just like I just three thousand miles away.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But it's actually quite fun over there too because I like going on the boats with Kaylee and but my mom has two sisters but only one of them has kids and none of them are my age.
SPEAKER_05I mean I'm kind of close to my cousin Tyson but he's like a year older than me he's like 13 okay one last question your favorite and and least favorite thing about your dad okay favorite and least favorite thing about favorite thing about my dad is um he will always say yes to me like you'll say no to me sometimes but you're always like you always whenever my friends are and I it's like kind of like we're getting bored and I can see that they're bored I'm like daddy can you take it to your store and you're like yeah but my least favorite thing is how you dress but I'm doing the right I'm doing the right thing then it's just see like you dress very casually no I don't just like a cartoon character I wear the same thing every day anyways um I feel like the favorite thing about my dad is how encouraging he is of me and he's my main supporter he's my main supporter but he also he he push me but he also helps me with a lot of things and so I really like that.
SPEAKER_01But I feel like my least favorite thing is I said this probably for the past five plus years is how much you work um so that's this is hard.
SPEAKER_02Um maybe my least favorite thing is when you get really intense I think that's probably my least favorite thing um I think we go all at it um my favorite thing is I like how like if we want things or like we have like certain goals you like help us get to that point. Also because you're pr I like that you're pretty chill in some things. Like I like sometimes I can go to you better than I can like with mom.
SPEAKER_01Yeah I've seen over the years how I'd rather go to you now instead of mom because you're pretty chill and I like how you most of the time have a positive attitude and rather than negative it's either you have a that it's either you really yeah you either have a really positive attitude or you have your screaming interfaces.
SPEAKER_05Yeah you're either only when it's warranted right okay guys so today we're gonna do this or you're screaming interfaces you just uh clearly um all of us dads probably need to go to therapy now this is really good um I think it what I really loved about this is you guys kind of showed all different sides. I mean there's the athletic side you guys talked about the spiritual side and that we spent a lot of time talking about that that's a big part of our lives and um it was great to have all of you on today and thanks for thanks for sharing and uh that's a wrap.
SPEAKER_02Yeah how long has this been
